Yogyakarta, October 1, 2025 — The Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a guest lecture featuring Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Armi Abu Samah from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The session, designed for doctoral students in Food Science, focused on an important topic: “Writing Scientific Articles and Research Proposal.”
During the lecture, Dr. Armi provided a comprehensive overview of the types of scientific articles and the publication platforms available to researchers. He explained strategic steps in the process of publishing scientific papers, starting from idea exploration, sourcing credible references, to collaboration with co-authors. He also emphasized the importance of clearly dividing tasks among authors, conducting plagiarism checks, and submitting manuscripts to appropriate journals.
Dr. Armi further offered valuable guidance on how to handle the review process. According to him, receiving a rejection from reviewers is not the end of the publication journey. “If your manuscript is rejected, take a few days to rest, then read the reviewer’s comments calmly before revising the paper carefully and resubmitting it,” he advised. He underlined that patience and precision are essential qualities in achieving impactful publication.
When it comes to selecting journals, Dr. Armi reminded participants not to submit an article to multiple journals simultaneously, and to ensure their choice aligns with the purpose, scope, and current trends of the research field. He also encouraged students to consult with their supervisors and refer to relevant, credible sources when determining the best publication target.
In the final part of the session, Dr. Armi elaborated on the structure of a scientific manuscript and shared practical tips for each section. He highlighted that the abstract should be concise, accurate, and specific without abbreviations, while the conclusion must clearly reflect the main findings and contributions of the study.
Through this guest lecture, it is expected that UGM’s doctoral students in Food Science will gain new insights and motivation to produce high-quality scientific manuscripts that can be published in reputable international journals.
