Rachma Wikandari, S.T.P., M.Biotech., PhD, a lecturer from the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology at UGM, fondly known as Wikan, has achieved a prestigious national award for her innovative research in food security and sustainability.

On October 11, 2024, Wikan was granted the National L’Oréal – UNESCO For Women in Science (FWIS) 2024 Award, a national accolade recognizing female researchers contributing to sustainable development. The recipients of this award demonstrate not only their commitment to groundbreaking research but also the capacity of science to address national and global challenges. Wikan was honoured for her innovation in developing tempeh-based mycoprotein, a high-quality alternative protein source with excellent nutritional value, rich in fiber, low in fat, and containing unsaturated fatty acids. read more

The wealth and diversity of Indonesia’s culinary culture are essential aspects of the country’s identity. However, this rich heritage faces threats as many traditional recipes remain undocumented, while younger generations are less inclined to learn cooking skills from their mothers and grandmothers.

The difficulty of finding traditional recipes and food culture records passed down orally from generation to generation arises from a lack of recipe documentation practices. Efforts to preserve Indonesia’s original recipes and food culture are crucial to maintaining cultural heritage and as a step toward resilience in all aspects, especially food security. read more

September 7-8, 2024 – Students from the Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology (S2 ITP) and Master’s Program in Estate Crop Product Processing Technology (S2 THP) of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Gadjah Mada University, who are enrolled in the Sweetener Technology class, conducted industrial visits to PT Madubaru and Adana Gula Semut. On September 3-4, 2024, the Department of Food and Agricultural Technology had the opportunity to host a guest lecture by Professor Hitoshi Shirakawa from Tohoku University. This event was part of the Kampus Merdeka Competition Program (PKKM) and was attended by undergraduate students taking Nutrition Science courses. In this lecture, Prof. Shirakawa presented two topics from his research: ‘Fermented Rice Bran and Its Ingredients for the Prevention of Lifestyle-Related Diseases’ and ‘Emerging Novel Functions of Vitamins for Healthy Life Expectancy.’ read more

From August 5 to 14, 2024, Universitas Jember hosted the Summer Course of Coffee 2024, a collaborative program involving various international institutions, including the University of California Davis (UC Davis) and the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI). This program was designed to explore the potential of Indonesian coffee, particularly in the Jember region, and to strengthen the relationship between academics and practitioners in the coffee industry.

The Faculty of Agricultural Technology at Universitas Gadjah Mada sent one of its graduate students in Plantation Products Technology, Rachma Widya Puspita, to participate in this international summer course on coffee. In addition, Universitas Gadjah Mada also sent Dr. Widiastuti Setyaningsih as a mentor for this event, demonstrating UGM’s commitment to supporting academic development and international collaboration. read more

The International Summer Short-term Program 2023 was held from July 24 to August 1, 2023, at Central Luzon State University (CLSU) jointly organized with the Southeast Asian University Consortium for Graduate Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC), for which the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) serves as secretariat. There were three programs: Food Sustainability and Food Security in Freshwater Aquaculture, Sustainable Mushroom Pharming, and Sustainable and Efficient Goat Production. A signature collaborative program that focused on sustainable agricultural food production systems. The UC Graduate Forum will serve as a forum for information exchange, teamwork, and innovation in the field of agricultural sustainability. read more
