The Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP), Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a guest lecture for the Introduction to Agricultural Technology course on Monday (Sept 29, 2025). The session featured Diana Setiyawati, S.Psi., MHSc., Ph.D., Psychologist, from Faculty of Psychology, UGM who delivered an insightful lecture on manners and ethics in the academic environment.
Dr. Diana opened the session by inviting students to reflect on their feelings—such as excitement, anger, tiredness, sadness, worry, or accomplishment—as a way to connect emotions with ethical awareness. She emphasized that success in life is not defined solely by intelligence but also by one’s ability to uphold ethics and integrity.
She further explained that morality, manners, and ethics are shaped by multiple factors, starting from family as the primary social environment, then peers, and the broader community—including the digital world. To make the discussion practical, Dr. Diana presented case studies, guiding students on how to respond ethically to real-life situations. Empathy and appreciation, she noted, are two essential principles for ethical communication.
The lecture also touched on campus-specific contexts, such as maintaining respectful interactions with lecturers and peers as part of academic and personal development. Concluding the session, Dr. Diana highlighted that every individual possesses basic potential—an inner resource that can be cultivated to grow into capable, ethical professionals.
Through this guest lecture, TPHP UGM hopes students will not only strengthen their academic knowledge but also develop the ethical mindset needed to become responsible changemakers in their future careers and communities.
