Yogyakarta, November 12, 2025 – The Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, organized a guest lecture for undergraduate students of Food and Agricultural Product Technology, featuring Rachmanto B. Wijoyo from PT PCU Indonesia. With the theme “The Life of an Auditor in the Food Industry,” the event aimed to provide firsthand insight into the role of auditors in ensuring food safety, quality, and sustainability. This activity also supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
In his presentation, Rachmanto explained that the modern food industry faces increasingly high demands in terms of food safety, product quality, and sustainability. To respond to these challenges, many companies adopt international management standards such as ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management Systems and ISO 22000:2018 for Food Safety Management Systems. These standards ensure that food is safe for consumption at every stage of the supply chain and can be applied across all production lines, from agriculture and processing industries to distribution and packaging. The implementation of ISO standards has been proven to improve product quality, expand access to export markets, and increase efficiency and consumer trust.
Furthermore, Rachmanto described the role and career pathway of an auditor. An auditor is responsible for assessing an organization’s compliance with standards, not only through document reviews but also through direct field observations, such as at production sites, factories, and export facilities. Therefore, an auditor must possess technical competence in standards (ISO, HACCP, organic), system analysis skills, effective communication abilities, reporting skills, and a strong commitment to integrity and professional ethics.
Through this guest lecture, students gained an overview of career opportunities in the food industry, certification bodies, management system consultancy, and non-governmental organizations focusing on sustainability. It is hoped that this activity will help students better understand the application of management systems in the industrial world as a foundation for future career development and professional certification, as well as encourage their readiness to face global challenges in the food sector.
