Graduate Students Explore Food Industry Innovation and Sustainability in Boyolali Industrial Visit

As part of its continued commitment to practical learning and sustainable development, the Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology (S2 ITP) and Master’s Program in Estate Crop Product Processing Technology (S2 THP) at the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FTP UGM), organized an industrial field trip to PT So Good Food Dairy, PT So Good Food Ready-to-Eat (RTE), and Cepogo Cheese Park in Boyolali Regency, Central Java. Held on November 22, 2024, the visit was accompanied by faculty members from the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology and aimed to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world industrial practices. read more

As part of the 2024 Program Kompetisi Kampus Merdeka, the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology at Universitas Gadjah Mada held a guest lecture series on October 16, October 30, and November 13, 2024. This session invited Dr. Ulfatun Nisa, M.Biotech., Head of the Pharmaceutical Production Unit (UPF) of Traditional Health Services (Yankestrad) in Tawangmangu. The lecture, titled “Functional Foods Based on Herbs and Spices,” was attended by undergraduate students enrolled in the Functional Food course. read more

Coordination and Technical Discussion on F₀ Testing of Canned Fish Products with the Berau District Fisheries Office

On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology at Universitas Gadjah Mada hosted a coordination and discussion session with the Fisheries Office of Berau District, East Kalimantan. The meeting took place in the TPHP Department Conference Room, located on the 3rd floor of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, UGM.

The event brought together representatives from both TPHP UGM and the Berau District Fisheries Office, highlighting a strong collaboration between academia and government in supporting innovation and the advancement of local food industries. read more

Guest Lecture on Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa Technology: Enhancing Cocoa Productivity and Quality

On October 28 and 30, 2024, the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP) at Universitas Gadjah Mada held a two-day guest lecture series exclusively for students enrolled in the Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa Technology course. The sessions featured Noor Ariefandie Febrianto, M.Sc., Ph.D., a postharvest researcher from the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (Puslitkoka), who delivered two insightful lectures on cocoa: “Cocoa Quality: Its Relevance to Genetics, Environment, and Postharvest Technology” and “Understanding Production Processes and Quality Control in Cocoa-Based Products.” read more

Exploring Nutritional Formulation and Fortification in the Food Industry with Dr. Sunardi Siswodiharjo

The Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP) at Universitas Gadjah Mada hosted a two-session guest lecture on November 7 and 14, 2024, featuring Dr. Sunardi Siswodiharjo, a research and development consultant at PT Hatifood. The event was held as part of the Merdeka Learning Campus Competition Program (Program Kompetisi Kampus Merdeka/PKKM). It was attended by undergraduate students enrolled in the course Nutritional Formulation and Fortification.

Dr. Sunardi opened the lecture series with a session titled “Nutritional Formulation: A Food Industry Landscape.” He began by offering insights into the career opportunities available to food technology graduates, particularly in industrial settings, drawing on his extensive professional background, which includes guest lecturing at numerous universities, authoring books, and publishing scientific articles. Sunardi emphasized the central role of formulation in the development of food products. read more

Guest Lecture by Prof. Paul Van der Meeren Highlights the Role of Nanotechnology in Food Science

The Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology welcomed Prof. Paul Van der Meeren from Ghent University, Belgium, as a guest lecturer on November 13, 2024. The lecture, titled “Food Applications of Nanotechnology: A Case Study of (Nano)Dispersions and Nano-emulsions,” was part of the Program Kompetisi Kampus Merdeka and aimed to provide students with valuable international exposure. 

Open to the public and mandatory for undergraduate students enrolled in the “Physical Properties of Foods and Agricultural Products” course, the event was designed to cultivate students’ critical and creative thinking skills while introducing them to the latest advancements in food technology. read more

TPHP UGM Students Achieve National and International Recognition with Sustainable Food Innovation

Students from the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) have once again showcased their excellence by winning both national and international competitions with innovative, sustainability-driven food products.

At the International Innovation Competition (IIC) 2024, organized by the International University of Malaya-Wales in October 2024, three TPHP students—Annaria Januari Christy (TPHP 2021), Novie Fitrita Wulandari (TPHP 2021), and Meutia Wigi Liestyana (TPHP 2023)—won a bronze medal for their plant-based innovation, “TEMPTASTIC: Plant-Based Sausage.” Their creation was guided by their academic supervisor, Putrika Citta Pramesi, S.T.P., M.Sc. The competition drew participants from five countries, including 28 universities and 10 secondary schools. read more

Rheometer Training Workshop at the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology

Food texture—such as hardness, elasticity, and adhesiveness—is a key factor influencing consumer acceptance of food products. To accurately assess these properties, a rheometer is used to measure the rheological parameters of food. In response to this need, the Department of Food and Agricultural Product Technology (TPHP) at Universitas Gadjah Mada held a rheometer training workshop from January 21 to 23, 2025.

The training was officially opened by the Department Secretary, Dr. Dwi Larasatie Nur Fibri, S.T.P., M.Sc., and was attended by lecturers, technicians, and students. The event was met with enthusiastic participation and was divided into three main sessions: a theoretical session, a hands-on practical session, and an interactive discussion. read more

UGM Doctoral Student Wins Best Presentation Award in ICCMME 2025 with Eco-Friendly Packaging Innovation

Arum Widyastuti Perdani, a doctoral student in Food Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada, was awarded the Best Presentation Award at the 10th International Conference on Composite Materials Engineering (ICCMME 2025), held at Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea, from January 8 to 10, 2025. Arum is also an alumna of UGM’s undergraduate program in Food and Agricultural Product Technology class of 2014 and master’s program in Food Science and Technology class of 2018.

Representing UGM among participants from 19 countries, Arum presented her dissertation thesis titled “Pectin and Chitosan Biofilm Composites Enriched with Rambutan Peel Anthocyanins for Colorimetric Intelligent Food Packaging.” Her research introduced an innovative smart packaging system made from biofilm capable of visually indicating food quality through color shift. read more

TPHP UGM Strengthens Fresh Food Safety Awareness Among Local Communities and Businesses
