September 7-8, 2024 – Students from the Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology (S2 ITP) and Master’s Program in Estate Crop Product Processing Technology (S2 THP) of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Gadjah Mada University, who are enrolled in the Sweetener Technology class, conducted industrial visits to PT Madubaru and Adana Gula Semut. The purpose of these visits was to deepen students’ understanding of the application of science and technology in the sweetener industry.
The visit to PT Madubaru began with a briefing on the sugarcane production process at the Madukismo Sugar Factory. During this session, students actively participated in discussions with PT Madubaru representatives, addressing challenges related to the decline in sugarcane raw materials and the importance of collaborating with sugarcane farmers to maintain supply stability. Students also had the opportunity to witness firsthand the sugar production process, from sugarcane milling to the packaging of the final product.
On the second day, students continued their visit to Adana Gula Semut. In addition to producing palm sugar, Adana also processes ready-to-drink beverages such as legen from palm sap and coconut sap. Ms. Dinar, the owner of Adana Gula Semut, explained the palm sugar production process, both from palm sap and coconut sap. Challenges in tapping coconut sap were also discussed, as this process requires a high level of skill due to the safety risks faced by sap collectors who climb coconut trees. Moreover, the available tapping technology has not fully eased the work for collectors.
Students took part in the traditional processing of palm sugar, from boiling sap using firewood to grinding it with coconut shells. This experience provided profound insights into palm sugar production techniques that preserve local wisdom.
This activity aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by encouraging collaboration between industry and sugarcane farmers and improving the welfare of sap collectors. Additionally, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) is reflected through efforts to maintain the sustainability of locally-based natural sweetener production.
Through this visit, students are expected to apply the knowledge gained in class and contribute innovations to developing a sustainable sweetener industry.
